2.5.5 Side notes to measures of dispersion

There are quite a lot of other measures of dispersion. For example by squaring the difference with the median instead of the mean, and taking the average of those, you obtain the Mean of Squared Deviations from the Median. Another approach is to take the median of all the absolute differences with the median, or the median of all the absolute differences with the mean, or the average of the absolute deviations from the median.

Also for the coefficient of variation there are a few different approaches. A more basic variation on this is based on the range. By dividing the range by the sum of the minimum and maximum the coefficient of range is obtained, or by dividing it by the standard deviation the relative range.

Similar as for the coefficient of range, the quartiles can be used. By dividing the inter-quartile range by the sum of the 1st and 3rd quartile the Coefficient of Quartile Variation can be obtained.

Other measures of dispersion include: Mean Squared of Successive Differences, Coefficient of Dispersion, Leik’s D, Gini’s Mean Difference, Index of Diversity, etc.
